RESPECT find out what it  means to me sang Aretha

Aretha released this song the year after her reportedly abusive marriage ended, she asks why her man can't show or give her respect whilst she does everything for him, from working to running. the house, and demands her respect for him. She is asking for equality, which is most likely why the song became an anthem for the Civil Rights Movement.

So whilst all people should be treated with curtesy and manners, they can not and should not demand respect. The definition of respect is

Verb (action)

admire (someone or something) deeply, as a result of their abilities, qualities, or achievements.

"she was respected by everyone she worked with"
have due regard for (someone's feelings, wishes, or rights).
"I respected his views"

Noun - a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements. Sometimes respect as a noun is used negatively "young people's lack of     respect for     their parents"

This then makes respect a name for the due consideration of our elders, curtesy and manners, not an action.

If someone is demanding your respect, whilst not treating you in the manner they want you to treat them then this can make you feel resentful.

So remember whilst respect is a powerful thing, it shows value of your achievements, it is not a right and it is not something that can be requested. If someone wants your respect they have to earn it, otherwise there is a potential for an abusive relationship which is based on one party deeming themselves and their needs greater than you. Treat all people with curtesy, but keep respect for those who are able to give it to you, whilst knowing you share their values and are able to freely respect them in return,
